Biography Of Victor Chang

Victor Chang was born in 1936 in Shanghai to Australian-born Chinese parents. As a little boy he grew up in Hong Kong where he attended primary school in Kowloon province.

In 1948, Victor Chang’s mother died of cancer. He was only 12 years old. It was around his mother’s death the Victor Chang first decided that he was going to become a doctor to help and combat diseases that affect people especially cancer. He then attended a catholic secondary school, St. Paul's College where he spent two years of his high school life.

Victor Chang moved to Australia in 1951 and he completed his secondary education at Christian Brothers' High School. After finishing high school, Victor Chang attended University of Sydney where he studied medicine.

In 1960, he graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Science. He then graduated with a Bachelor of Surgery in 1962.

Early in his career he was inspired by a heart surgeon Dr. Mark Shanahan who become is mentor. Dr. Chang worked at St Vincent's Hospital before Dr. Shanahan sent him to England to do more training.

Dr. Chang then worked at the Royal Brompton Hospital and trained in cardiothoracic surgery, which is an operation on the heart and blood vessels to prevent or repair damage caused by clogged arteries in the heart.

From London, Dr. Chang went to work at the Mayo Clinic in the United States and became the chief surgeon.

Dr. Chang returned to Australia in 1972 and returned to work at the St Vincent's Hospital where he performed many surgeries as a cardiothoracic surgeon.

Dr. Chang becomes famous as a surgeon in 1984 when he operated on 14-year old Fiona Coote who became Australia's youngest heart transplant patient.

Dr. Chang met his wife Ann in London and married in February 19th, 1986.

Prime Minister John Howard awarded Victor Chang the title as Australian of the Century at the people's choice awards

2008

The Victor Chang Lowy Packer building was opened at the St Vincent's Hospital
